Duomo - The Cathedral

The first construction of the Duomo or Cathedral of Taormina dates back to the thirteenth century on the ruins of a church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari. Then, It was rebuilt in the fifteenth, sixteenth and eighteenth century.

The building looks more fortress than religious institution. This impression is accentuated by the construction made entirely with large stone blocks and finished with battlements along the whole perimeter of the building. The facade is adorned with a large rose window made of Siracusa stone of excellent workmanship. Two other rosettes on sides of the east and west of the church.

Church of St. Joseph (San Giuseppe)

The church of San Giuseppe in Taormina was built in in the Baroque style between the late 1600s and the early 1700s.

This church, dedicated to St. Joseph, is located next to the Clock Tower and faces out onto Piazza IX Aprile. A double staircase, with a balustrade of Syracuse stone, leads up to the entrance.

Church of Varò

The Church of Varò (Chiesa del Varò) is located at the end of a stairway that departs from Corso Umberto I, just after the Clock Tower.

The church was built by Cav. Blasio Corvaja in the late eighteenth century, and the work was finished by his brother Sigismondo at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Most probably the building was built on a pre-existing built by the Romano family.

Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria

The construction of the present church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria occurred after the Capuchins bought the previous church dedicated to the saint of Alexandria that was outside the walls (the current church of Sant'antonio da Padova).

The certain date of this church construction is not known; we know that the ancient church of Santa Caterina, outside the walls, was sold to the Capuchin Friars in 1610.
